Our Writing Journey
Each little step in the video shows our journey from initial consonant, vowel, consonant words in Reception – to extended written pieces in Key Stage 2.
We know our writing journey isn’t ever finished at the end of Year 6 – but it is a never ending story – so forgive our imperfections or the odd bit of missing punctuation. We are working with our children to help them to correct, improve and edit their work, also.
Our children are demonstrating progress every time they put pen to paper because they are knowing more and remembering more….
For those children who find writing difficult, we adapt our teaching to accommodate their needs either through differentiation or by support. You may also see examples of ‘in the moment’ feedback, or the use of Widgit to support their learning.

Please find below a summary of our English writing journey from Reception to Year 6.
St. Joseph’s recognise that there are several approaches to enhancing pupils’ ability to know and remember more of the teaching of EGPS including:
- Regular teaching of EGPS e.g. As a standalone EGPS lesson which forms part of the unit of study – this should take place on a weekly basis
- Daily revision of key skills e.g. abstract nouns, subjunctive mood, tense work via memory recall at the start of the lesson
- Or if the EGPS components are pivotal to the writing journey, successive lessons may take place e.g. over two or three days to support pupils’ ability to utilise EGPS structures within extended writing tasks.
